Any momentum Melbourne hoped to gain from last week against Fremantle has not eventuated, at least after the first five or so minutes tonight.
The Demons are fortunate to be ahead of Richmond at half-time – by only four points – after Nick Vlastuin inexplicably fluffed a chip kick deep in defensive 50 straight to Harry Petty, who kicked his second goal of the term.
This has been a pretty ugly contest, befitting a game between two bottom-four teams.
Melbourne may not have thought that was their lot entering the season, but that is how far this team has sunk.
On the other hand, the Tigers have been plucky again despite fielding seven players with fewer than 20 games’ experience.
They are right in this, and could end the night with a third victory from seven matches after doomsday predictions they may not win any at all in 2025.
